Hong Kong Leyland Olympians

Leyland first entered Hong Kong's bus scene when it took over production of the Fleetline double decker bus from Daimlar in the later half of the 1970's. Its next product in Hong Kong was the Leyland Victory Mk-II. Both of these models were purchased by China Motor Bus and Kowloon Motor Bus throughout the 1970's and 1980's. Throughout the 1990's all of these buses were retired. However, in 1982 one Leyland Olympian was introduced to Kowloon Motor Bus. The following year, delivery of more Olympians began. Olympians were delivered to Kowloon Motor Bus and Citybus throughout the 1980's, all of these being non-air conditioned and coming in lengths of 12, 11, 10.4 and 9.5 metres. In 1990, the first successful air-conditioned bus was a Leyland Olympian from Kowloon Motor Bus (AL1). Following orders from Kowloon Motor Bus, Citybus and China Motor Bus all took place from 1991 to 1994. Non-air conditioned Leyland Olympians continued to be delivered to Kowloon Motor Bus and a limited number to China Motor Bus. In 1994 the production of the Olympian was taken over by Volvo. Leyland Olympians have been powered by Gardner 6 Cylinder engines, Leyland TL11's and Cummins LT/LTA 10's. Transmissions used have been Leyland's, ZF's and Voith's. Nearly 1200 Leyland Olympians were delivered to Hong Kong during a span of about 10 years production time. Bodies used were mainly Walter Alexander with some Eastern Coach Works and several Roe.
