2000/2001 SD-160 (C-Train)

In 2000, 2001 and 2002, Calgary Transit took delivery of it's first new C-Train cars since 1985, these new cars were 15 Siemens SD160 cars. The SD160 is the high loading platform version of the SD100. The new C-Train cars run on an Alternating Current (AC) like the 2nd hand 1988 U2-AC cars. There are a many differences between the U2 and SD160. Some of the most noticeable differences are seat configuration, more legroom, sliding doors, less side to side sway but a little more up and down sway, much more exterior noise and of course they look very different. The reason of such high exterior noise is because the ventilation system and DC-AC converters are on the roof of the car, while on a U2 almost everything is under the floor. These new cars were needed to accommodate the opening of two new stations (October 2001) in the south and a 3.4km extension that came along with the new stations. These new cars spent a lot of time in the shops after arrival as the task of introducing a completely new and different C-Train car to the system was slowly taken into hand, eventually most of the bugs were worked out and the cars generally run trouble free now a days.
